The Biometric and Token Technology Application Modelling Language

BANTAM stands for Biometric and Token Technology Application Modelling Language and represents a comprehensive methodology for specifying, designing and implementing systems within the sphere of identity management and related applications. Furthermore, BANTAM extends into areas of procurement, business case development and training, providing a complete approach to be used across both technical and business areas. The BANTAM notation and associated document set are freely available in both European and US formats. In addition, a software package entitled BANTAM Programme Manager, is available, with which to manage related projects, and a comprehensive introduction entitled The BANTAM User Guide is published by Springer ( ISBN 1-85233-513-0 ).

While BANTAM was originally conceived with identity management projects in mind, in fact, the methodology is transparent and applicable to a broad range of applications. The BANTAM notation may easily be used to describe mainstream IT developments, although it does include specialised components for biometrics and token technology. The methodology consists of the following components:

·         The BANTAM Graphical Notation is a series of intuitive objects with which to describe various systems, infrastructure and process components, together with their particular attributes and properties. They may be used within various graphics programmes and are found incorporated within certain versions of SmartDraw, one of the most popular business graphics programmes.

·         The BANTAM Maps are a series of defined systems architecture maps which offer a layered approach to describing levels of increasing complexity. In this manner, non-technical business aspirations may be translated into technical systems design. Furthermore, the BANTAM Maps provide a detailed audit trail of systems design and implementation which may be re-used for purposes of systems support and training, providing a coherent thread throughout the project life-cycle.

·         The BANTAM Document Set provides a set of associated documents for use in procurement and training, which ensure that all important factors have been adequately covered. This brings consistency, professionalism and, consequently, efficiency to related projects.

BANTAM brings an elegant simplicity and repeatability to both small and large scale projects, together with documented audit trails for all levels of design, procurement and implementation. This is particularly pertinent to large scale identity management applications within the public sector, as well as more mainstream IT projects. Furthermore, the use of BANTAM can provide very considerable cost savings to such projects via its introduction of structure, enhanced communications and re-use. Best of all, the BANTAM notation and document set is freely available under an open distribution model.

On this site you will find downloadable components as well as other details applicable to the BANTAM methodology. You may also contact the BANTAM team directly with observations and experiences in this context.
